Choosing a pallet supplier looks like a price comparison and rarely is. What actually decides the cost over a year is whether the stock is real, whether the supplier can repair, how far the lorry has to drive and whether they will take the empties back. Six criteria worth checking before you commit.
Six criteria for a reliable supplier
- Real stock, not a catalogue. Ask what is in the yard today and in what quantity. A website listing is not an availability.
- Own production or repair. A supplier with a workshop can make a non-standard size and can react when you need pallets tomorrow.
- Distance. Pallets are bulky and transport is a real share of the price. A supplier 50 km away is usually cheaper overall than one 300 km away, even at a worse unit price.
- Sorting by grade. Pallets should arrive graded, not as an undifferentiated heap labelled “used”.
- Buy-back. A supplier who also buys pallets closes the loop and saves you a delivery charge on the return leg.
- Paperwork. Invoices, handover protocols, and ISPM 15 treatment certification when you export.
Why the local supplier wins
A standard semi-trailer takes 33 euro pallets. Once you know that number, the arithmetic of distance becomes obvious: every kilometre is spread across 33 units, and a long haul quietly adds more to the unit price than any discount you negotiated. A supplier close by also means:
- same-day availability when something goes wrong;
- the option to come and look at the pallets before you buy;
- small orders that still make economic sense;
- buy-back that works in both directions on the same journey.
