Why impregnate timber at all?
Impregnation is the step that decides how long a timber structure lasts. Without it, wood takes on moisture and becomes an easy target for insects and the weather. Below is what the treatment actually buys you.
The main benefits
- Protection from moisture and rot — impregnation stops the wood absorbing water, which is what reduces the risk of mould and mildew.
- Weather resistance — UV light, rain and snow all damage untreated wood; proper treatment keeps it sound and good-looking.
- Insect protection — woodworm and other pests can destroy a timber structure, and impregnation creates a protective layer against them.
- A longer service life — treated wood lasts considerably longer, which lowers the cost of replacement and repair.
How the treatment is carried out
Timber cut to its final size is impregnated by full immersion, which is efficient because the wood sits completely submerged in the solution for a set time and the impregnant soaks in to depth. The dipping is done in tanks built for the purpose. The pieces are arranged in packs and pushed below the surface with a hydraulic arm, with cross battens separating the rows so every element is wetted on all sides and the whole surface is treated evenly. A dip normally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. An extended 24-hour immersion gives longer-lasting protection, with penetration of up to 3 mm.
